To My Customers

To the wonderful grandmother who called in for help with her dsl because she wanted one thing to work right in her granddaughters life. Her daughter was getting a divorce and she and her children went to live with her mother. Who was the grandmother that called in. She was so sweet, of course the issue was not the dsl service it was her computer. Totally out of my “scope of support.” So what did I do…

I did what any benevolent empress would do, I had her do a system restore and wipe out the last 5 days. Voila, she was able to access the Internet, that was when the whole story poured out. I told her she was doing an amazing thing and it was wonderful she was able to provide a stable home for her grandchildren.

For the retired gentleman who promised his wife he would get the newly ordered Internet service up and running when he did not know how to work the new laptop they had just purchased. You were so kind and patient as I walked you through everything, even when you still could not type in the password correctly, you allowed me to do what I do best… Take control. I did not make you feel inadequate for not being able to type and for that you were kind to me in return.

For the kinda creepy man who offered to marry me at the end of my day for getting you back on line.

I thank each and every one of you. It is customers like yourselves that makes my job truly fulfilling. For the ones who don’t cuss me out when they are the ones who have downloaded all of the things that make their computers crash, for the ones that tell me how amazing I am, how smart I am and in general make me feel good about the time I have spent with them, for the ones that tell me this is their only lifeline to the world as they are handicapped and not able to get out into the “real” world, for all of you I want to say a great big thank you.

My job is to help people with their Internet service, and I love it, I love it when I am able to correct the issues and people are so happy to be able to see their emails again! I love their reaction when they open their browser and wow they are magically online again.

For my customers that are genuinely nice, you totally rock!!!

Dawn of a new era

Well another Presidential election has come and gone. We have a new President, with a different Party in power for the first time in a long time.

I have adopted a wait and see attitude. I hope “change” is around the corner. I hope that now we can all work together to strengthen our amazingly great country.

Here is my major concern, I am not a pacifist, I do not relish the idea of us not being a strong nation in the sense of military power. Especially with the climate that is prevalent in today’s world. It greatly concerns me.

I will of course continue to pray for the office of President, Congress, Senate, Governor and every other elected official. I hope this is the beginning of a great era. As always I am an optimist at heart.

Halloween

Ok, so on Sunday I was watching a show on the history channel about Halloween. I had no Idea that the great holiday started in Ireland.

Why was I not up on the history of Halloween? Me! I love history, all history, of everything. And, I LOVE Halloween. The come as you aren’t holiday. Or, as I like to refer to it, the come as you really want to dress every day holiday.

I have not planned well for this year. I was not going to dress up as I was not going to be at work, then I was invited to a party, so costume plans are on. I have not decided on what I want to dress as yet.

I have a ton of costumes in my closet, there is the Anna Nicole, in poor taste now that she is dead, the Greek goddess, Wonder Woman (my personal favorite), Barbie doll one, and of course the quintessential sexy witch.

I will probably go with the witch one, I love that costume. However I love my wonder woman boots and have only worn them twice. Ugh, decisions.

Any thoughts on what I should be? And I would love to hear what everyone else is dressing up as!

Family

I have been thinking a lot lately about family. What constitutes family, Webster’s defines family as 1: a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head : household2 a: a group of persons of common ancestry : clan b: a people or group of peoples regarded as deriving from a common stock : race3 a: a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation : fellowship b: the staff of a high official (as the President)4: a group of things related by common characteristics: as a: a closely related series of elements or chemical compounds b: a group of soils with similar chemical and physical properties (as texture, pH, and mineral content) that comprise a category ranking above the series and below the subgroup in soil classification c: a group of related languages descended from a single ancestral language 5 a: the basic unit in society traditionally consisting of two parents rearing their children ; also : any of various social units differing from but regarded as equivalent to the traditional family <a single-parent family> b: spouse and children.

Considering that I am adopted and both of my parents are now deceased my “family” consists of my children. However, I have come to the realization that family is more than blood ties.

Being a single parent with no dictionary definition of family for support, I have cultivated my own version of a “family”. I have a multitude of sisters and even an annoying younger brother. I am a very fortunate person to have all of these people who have consented to being a part of my non-blood family.

I guess the reason it comes so easy for me to have all of these people in my life is due to the fact that I am adopted, it is easier to accept different people of different backgrounds when you yourself are thrust into a world into which you are not really born.

For all of my “family” thank you for being part of my life!!!

Presidential Elections

Let me start off by stating this is not a political writing Per Se. With all of the Presidential Election coverage and the fact it is the first time my daughter gets to vote I am flooded with memories of the first presidential election I got to vote in.

It was 1983, I was so excited to get to vote for the first time. Voting is a very big deal in my family, from day one I was taught it was my responsibility to be well informed and take the time to educate myself on everything all candidates had to say. My parents took this very seriously.

Every year I remember my mom working at the polling station located at the local Catholic Church, my dad would drive people who were unable to drive themselves to the various polling places. They were passionate about the voting process.

Getting back to my first time, I remember everything about it. My polling place was located at the fire station, my voting outfit was this really great navy and white skirt and matching top with blue kitten heel shoes. I wore pearls, I felt the occasion called for pearls. I even remember the people around me, the woman in front of me was older (probably the age I am now) and she had brought a book to read while in line, the gentleman behind me was older, maybe in his 70’s. He and I struck up a conversation, he asked if it was my first time voting and I told him yes it was. He was so nice, he told me all about his first time voting and how proud it made him to see young people in line exercising their right to vote. He was a war veteran and felt a keen sense of pride in seeing all of the people enjoying their freedom to have their say in how the country is run.

Going into the voting booth for the first time, a heady experience indeed, the sights, the sounds, even the smells, just overwhelming. To this day, when I step into a voting booth it all comes rushing back.

This is my daughters first time to vote, I hope that she has just as positive an experience as I had. I am going to go with her and take a picture. I went with my son when it was his first time to vote, however I failed to capture that moment for posterity. I will not fail in my duty as a mother this time!

I know you all are wondering who I voted for that first time, well, it was Ronald Reagan. This is the one and only instance where I tell people who I voted for. I take the secrecy thing very seriously.

When President Reagan gave his exit speech I cried like a big fat baby. I called my mother, I don’t even know how she knew who was on the other end of the line! I think all she understood was president and exit speech. She told me she knew how I felt, she cried like that when Roosevelt left office, he was her first presidential election. And that is the only one that I know that she voted for!

When President Reagan died I cried again, this time I didn’t have my mother to console me. She had already left this earth.

I hope every one exercises their right to vote. I don’t care what political party you have chosen to be a part of, I don’t care who you vote for, just go vote!

And if it is your first time to vote, well, don’t let anyone rush you, just enjoy the moment! Take a camera!

Heavy On My Mind

Ok, I wasn’t going to ever, ever write about this, however, I had a very sleepless night and this is so heavy on my mind I have to get it out, so you all get to read about it!

At work there is (well there used to be) a woman that allegedly stole company money. I say alleged due to this has not been tried in a court of law.

It all started with money that she took from our morale committee and she said she was putting it in a bank account. No one else had access only her. The members of the committee repeatedly asked for a bank statement, she always had an excuse as to why she could not produce one, until finally she just flat out refused. She is a manager, did I mention that.

Well, someone on the committee called in asset protection within our company.

Unbeknownest to everyone, allegedly (there is that word again) she has been doing this type of thing with real company money and for quite some time.

Here is what is heavy on my mind. She is a single mom and her financial situation was precarious at best. I am simply basing this opinion on things that she let slip.

As a single mom, over the years and there have been times over the past 15 years where I have had to make very difficult decisions. Do I pay the electric bill or feed my children? There is nothing more difficult than making that call to ask for an extension to pay your bill, you feel like such a loser. There are so many of us that face or have faced those challenges. I admit I no longer face those types of difficulties. I thank God every single day of my life for my excellent paying job and my Mary Kay career as one allows me to pay the bills and feed my children and live in a great neighborhood (my job) and the other, my Mary Kay career allows my to buy all of the extras, class rings for all of my children, my sons lacrosse equipment, the boys guitar lessons, art lessons and dance class for my daughter. I am so amazingly blessed.

Now I know what you are thinking, this woman was a manager, didn’t she make good money. Well, no, she didn’t make what I make. She made way less.

The huge difference between me and her is I never took what didn’t belong to me to see to my financial obligations.

I wish I could go back in time and talk to the woman she was, the one before she made all of the bad decisions. I wish I could tell her if she just persevered things do have a tendency to work themselves out.

What I would like is for anyone who reads this to do is to simply say a prayer not only for the single moms who face these hardships, but the single dads, and the two parent households. Everyone faces adversity of some form or another. None is immune. It is how we face those situations that says who we are.

I hope everyone out there has as good of friends as I have been blessed with, the ones that when I let slip I was having a hard time said, OMG Girl, Me Too!!!

That made things easier somehow.

Thanks to all of you!!!

Epiphany

I have recently had a huge epiphany. I will never achieve my goal of being like my mother. It is way hard! I don’t know how she did it! Being good all of the time, only thinking good thoughts about people. Never judging them for the things they wear or they way they speak or the things they do. OMG! I don’t know how she did it!

My only conclusion is she must not have been fully human. In the Bible it talks about Angels coming down and mating with humans. She must have been a direct descendant. That is my scientific conclusion as to her perfectness.

I have decided that in order to be like her I will have to suppress my natural inclinations to voice anything I am thinking at the moment I am thinking those thoughts.

This is going to be way hard. I will probably backslide a lot. For those of you un-baptist people, backsliding is a very Baptist term for those of us who continually sin. Wait, I don’t mean us, I mean other people. Not me…. (just in case anyone I know reads this, I never, ever, ever do anything that could be considered backsliding….)

Tetanus Shot

Thank you Wanda Lewis!

An old man in his mid-eighties struggles to get up
From the couch then starts putting on his coat. His
Wife, seeing the unexpected behavior, asks,
“Where are you going?”
He replies, “I’m going to the doctor.”
She says, “Why, are you sick?”
He says, “Nope, I’m going to get me some of that
 Viagra stuff.”

Immediately the wife starts working and positioning
Herself to get out of her rocker and begins to put
On her coat.
He says, “Where the heck are you going”?
She answers, “I’m going to the doctor, too.”
He says, “Why, what do you need?”
She says, “If you’re going to start using that rusty old thing, I’m getting a Tetanus shot.”
