Disney Woes

Something has been bothering me for a while now, it is a disturbance in the Force.
So, an open letter to Disney I am writing, on behalf of little girls everywhere. But mostly Tessa.

Dear Disney,

I have a nine-year-old granddaughter that loves you, she not only loves you, she loves Star Wars. She not only loves Star Wars, she loves Darth Vader, Chewbacca and anything that has to do with a lightsaber.
Last year, when I went on a search for an outfit for her annual Christmas pictures, I lucked out, I found the most amazing outfit ever. At Kohl’s of all places, I will include her Christmas picture from last year at the end of this blog so you can see how amazing it was.
This year I was on a quest to purchase her an outfit or pajamas with her beloved Darth Vader.
Do you think I found any girl outfits with him on it? You know the answer; it is no. I ended up buying her boys pajamas with storm troopers on it talking about the Dark Side.
I did a search online for any and all girl Star Wars clothing. The majority is pink, purple and has no bad guys on them. None. No Darth Vader, no Darth Maul, not even Anakin Skywalker, before the Dark Side took over. I didn’t even find a Princess Leia outfit, now there are costumes, but no shirts, pajamas or dresses.
I did find a couple of dresses online, but nothing like last years. This year’s offerings were paltry in comparison.
I am begging you to understand that little girls everywhere love Star Wars and love all characters, no just ones deemed appropriate for girls.
They also love the Marvel Universe, they love Thor, Ironman, Hulk and Black Widow. With Black Panther and Captain Marvel on the horizon, I am begging you to step up your girl game.
Please understand that girls are as equally nerdy and geeky as boys, they enjoy wearing their favorite characters and would love to have clothes made to fit them.
I know what you are thinking, buy a boy’s shirt, well, they are boxy and cut short. They are really strange fitting, so if you could make girl shirts and pajamas and gowns and dresses it would be awesome.
I know I would appreciate it, she would appreciate it, as would many other little girls worldwide.
You have an opportunity to make an impact here Disney, you do the spunky princess so well. You know little girls; you know sass and heart and having the courage of your convictions. You know smart women characters, Belle comes to mind right away, Tiana is another. They were the rescuers in their worlds.
Princess Leia was a perfect fit to your world, no one in any galaxy, compares to her. She taught us so much when I was young, and she continues to teach generations even now.
Pick up a blaster and save yourself and your so-called rescuers, there was, is and never will be another one of her.
Please keep her legacy alive and give our girls a clothing line worthy of our beloved Princess.

My Thoughts on The Force Awakens

I am filled with emotion right now, good, bad, angry, sad, elated, all spectrums of the emotional range, I am.
I just saw then new Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, I am overwhelmed. This will be a spoiler free post, just in case you were wondering.
First of all, seeing the familiar and hearing the familiar, from John Williams unforgettable score, to Chewbacca’s signature, well, I have no words to describe his language, it was just incredible.
You can tell this film was done by someone who loves the whole Star Wars realm, which kinda pisses me off. Because this is the same person who did the reboot of another much beloved realm, Star Trek.
The differences between the two are glaring, J. J. Abrams himself admitted he was not a fan of ST, however was a huge fan of SW. I cannot begin to tell you how I wish ST had been entrusted to someone who loved it.
I am not going to put down the ST movies, as I did enjoy them for what they were, they were not my beloved ST, they were different.
However, having seen how he treats something he loves vs. how he treats something he has no heart in, well it leaves me angry.
I will be seeing TFA again, and again, and yet again, because it is just that good, not good, great, awesome, amazing. Lovingly crafted by someone who has respect, knowledge and a fondness for detail. This was a film, ST was a movie, huge difference.
My hopes are high for the new ST coming out, however, having seen the trailer, I am not holding out hope. Even though Simon Pegg has rushed to assure true fans of ST that the movie is nothing like the trailer and he, himself was disappointed with it.
I am one of those people that love both, Star Trek and Star Wars, I am more passionate about Star Trek. I readily admit that, Star Trek introduced me to space travel, it took me to places I will never be able to visit outside of my imagination. It gave me hope for the future of earth, like nothing else does, as the realities of this earth are getting closer to a nuclear meltdown.
Star Wars took me to a galaxy far, far away, where none of the characters were from earth, therefore not bound by human rules. It was old fashioned good vs. evil, and you can easily tell the good guys from the bad.
I love them both. I just wish the same person had not done both in this generation.

Star Trek Thoughts

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, with those words we are taken into the darkness. I have been in love with Star Trek since I was four years old, the characters spoke to me, and the storylines held my interest and fired my imagination. There were times I wanted Spock to be my dad, I wanted to grow up and marry Captain Kirk and Scotty was like a loveable Uncle. Bones was the grumpy old neighbor and I wanted to be Lieutenant Uhura. She was on the bridge, confident, self assured and looked good doing it.
I have watched all of the incarnations of Star Trek, I have stuck with them even when it seemed that they had lost their way. I was not overly fond of Deep Space Nine towards the end; I loved Voyager and was hopeful during the reign of Captain Archer.
When the first “new” movie was announced, and I heard J.J. Abrams was at the helm, I was reserved, although I love him, this was my beloved Star Trek. I have to be honest, he has not disappointed, he has taken Gene Rodenberry’s vision and stayed the course. He has given us a whole new lease on the franchise, by rebooting it and taking it down a different timeline he has opened a slew of opportunity for new stories. New takes on old stories, he is staying true to the concepts of good Science Fiction, tell a good story, give us some gadgets and interweave a moral.
This latest installment did not disappoint me; I am not going to give anything away, no spoilers here. I am going to just say that the characters are true to themselves, the humor, the intensity, the loyalty are all there.
I am still in love with Kirk, I still want Spock as a dad, Scotty is looking less like an Uncle as Simon Pegg has done an outstanding job in adding layers to this character. I still want to be like Uhura, she is a force to be reckoned with, and I love the relationship between her and Spock with the new timeline.
All in all, J.J. Abrams has been respectful to the long time loyalist all the while bringing in a new generation to enjoy this amazing franchise.
I will not get into a debate regarding Star Trek vs. Star Wars, they each have their own merits, personally I enjoy both for what they are. Although, let’s be honest, Star Trek paved the way for Star Wars.
The television show opened avenues for other aspiring Science Fiction storytellers; Star Trek brought it to the mainstream like none other before it had. I feel very comfortable telling everyone, everywhere, I am a Trekker; I will be applying for my honorary status as a Star Fleet Officer.

Renegades, Rebels and Rogues

Well here we are people the last day of 2012, I cannot say this year has been kind to me, however some really amazing things have happened. I am on the radio! Can you believe that! I still cannot believe my friend Shanon asked me to do the show with her. I am awestruck that someone had that much confidence in my ability to talk. Thank you so much Shanon for giving me such an amazing opportunity, I don’t have the words to express how much your belief in me means.
The Irishman was sick for almost all of 2012, we go into 2013 hopeful for continued recovery, it has been a rough year in that respect. But God is good and ever present and I believe led him to the right doctor to get him on the road to recovery.
My children are all healthy and doing well, I am so proud of all three, Jeffrey, Elizabeth and Alex; I literally do not know what kind of life I would have without them. They make everything better, when I see a text or call from one of them I smile and happily answer, except when I am at work Alex! I could not resist that, he knows what I mean.
As I look back at the past year I not only see the struggles, I see where I have been blessed beyond measure, I have my health, I have my wits, most of the time and I have amazing friends. I still do not understand what I ever did to deserve such amazing people in my life I am just grateful God saw fit to bring them to me.
I go into 2013 ever hopeful, not only for my life and the lives of my children, but for my friends and for the world. I go into 2013 with a positive attitude, with prayer for a better life and for continued growth, spiritually not physically, and with a renewed determination to make myself the best I can be. Without going into the Marines.
In my family the number 13 is a good luck number, we never really bought into the whole superstitious thing; we like to turn things around. I can only imagine what a whole year of 13 will bring.
So for Christmas Elizabeth gave me an ITunes gift card to download my two favorite albums that she stole. Tracey Lawrence and Kiss, well I have downloaded Tracey Lawrence and I cannot stop listening to it. I know what you are thinking, isn’t this the same singer that beat his wife in a hotel room in the ‘90’s. Yes, yes it is, however if the world can forgive Chris Brown the week after he beat the living daylights out of Rhianna, I figure it is time for us to forgive Tracey.
There is one song in particular that I love, Rebels, Renegades and Rogues, I have always considered myself a rebel and renegade, not so much a rogue. But what truly makes me a rebel, you ask, that is a good question. Well I have always gone against societal norms, as in I was and continue to be a girl nerd who knows fashion. An unusual combination, or used to be, not so much anymore, turns out I was a trail blazer, who knew. As for the renegade, well, I have never done what was expected, I drive fast, I rail against authority, not really, the last part, the first yes. Anyway if you are a country music fan I highly suggest you give Tracey Lawrence a try, some of my favorites are Alibis, Texas Tornado and If the Good Die Young.
I shall sign off for now, the next time I talk to you all it will be 2013, a new year, a new beginning, a new hope. See what I did there, I snuck a Star Wars reference in there, BBFF that was for you.

Rant

I am a Star Trek loving nerd, I would rather read than go to a party, I could spend weeks in a museum, as a matter of fact the Dallas Museum of Art has a fantastic bed in it on display. I don’t know if they have a shower but I could totally live there.
I have all of the outward appearances of being a fashion icon, and I am, trust me I love my shoes and boots and clothes, but I love my books more. I know it is a horrifying admission; I hid my tendencies in high school, never coming out of the closet for fear of ridicule. Actually that last part is not true, I never let my geek flag fly in high school because there was no one there to equal my geekiness, I didn’t want anyone feeling less than me.
Now, as I grow older, I find I do not care who knows how truly nerdy I am, I still watch Star Trek, rally anything with the word star in it, Star Trek, Stargate (all of them) Star Wars, the Last Star Fighter, I think you are getting the gist of my viewing habits. I will read anything, almost anything, I refuse to read 50 Shades of Grey, hideous book, sets the literary world back, well, it doesn’t books written in the past were so good, this one just is a joke. Why are people reading this trash? I can’t even get past the grammatical errors to get to any of the “good” parts. And now, now, I read they are making a movie based on this insidious claptrap? How? Why? Pandering I tell you, that is all it is, the world is simply giving into anything lascivious in nature and forget good writing, forget a plot line, forget anything that makes sense.
I find myself more and more annoyed at a world that has forgotten the art of the written word, a turn of a phrase, simple grammar. Lose, loose, two different words, two different meanings, I do believe that people have forgotten that, I see it all the time. Let’s look at that word in a sentence, shall we. Paul will loose the bolt. Paul will lose the bolt. In one sentence he is loosening something and in the other he has lost something.
Sometimes I admit it takes every ounce of self control I have not to correct people on social media. I control myself because deep down I do not want to hurt anyone; however is it doing them any favors by allowing them to continue in the way? It is a gamble, some people might be appreciative, others might cuss you out, and it’s a tough call. I think I shall choose my battles; it is difficult though, when the errors are so blatant, my fingers go to the keyboard, they hover, then, that part of the brain that says, “Hold the phone” takes over and I back away and don’t say anything. I admit, I allow this to continue, I do believe with social media being so popular we are truly seeing how the school systems are failing our children, and colleges. I have seen college graduates make simple mistakes, people with more than just a Bachelor degree, scary.
It is truly horrifying in today’s society that the best seller is a book that is so poorly written a 2nd grader could have done it, and the classics are falling by the wayside. I am sad for our future society.
